Short Somerset Break

Lynda and I have just returned from a short break in Somerset. It was an opportunity to see our eldest son and unwind.

We stayed at the Ship in Porlock, very comfortable room and great food. The very best in top quality pub food and some good ales on tap.
We managed a walk up on to Exmoor from Porlock and saw several Dipper on the way. The weather was wet to say the least

Mothers Day

We could not go too far today as our sons were visiting but we did manage a short walk around part of Thetford Forest (Cockley Cley Wood), Norfolk. It was quite windy with scattered showers of hail and sleet.

We parked on the Cockley Cley, Beachamwell road and walked around to the Drymere Riding School, from here we headed south east towards Shingham Farm Barn, which is now being converted into a house before retracing our steps slightly then heading back into the wood and returning to the car.

It was quite cool so there was no eveidence of any early Brimstone butterflies, I also looked for Adders but was also unlucky. Most activity was to found on the outdoor pig farm where the sows were busy chewing stones and looking at us walking by.

The site is on Landranger 144 with parking at TF776053. It is on forest rides and stony tracks and is quite flat. Most of the walk is through conifer plantation ranging from clear fell to mature trees. There is a large belt of beech trees which breaks the monotony of conifers up a bit.

There are facilities (food, drink toilets) at the local pub in Cockley Cley, Twenty Church Wardens about half a mile away. It is a bit of a dive but they do serve a tasty pie and chips and the beer is good.

The walk was about a mile and a half.
